Fall 2014

December 15, 2014 by

4Autumn 2014
Mindful Matters

What are you harvesting right now?

Ah Fall! Back to School, shorter days, warm fires, and beginning to harvest the results of the year’s work.  As we head into the final months of 2014 we may find ourselves taking stock of where we are right now. Whether its personal goals, annual results, project milestones or just a self check in, this time of year presents new opportunities even when it may feel otherwise. So often we find a giving in to the calendar:  either checking out because what we want for the year feels out of reach or an intense race to the finish line – no matter how far off goal we may be.  While the harvest may feel like more than you can handle or short of what you had hoped for, we invite you to trust it. And as you trust it, imagine what’s possible from this place.  How will you tap into the bounty of what is?  How will you use this energy to fuel a spectacular season – whatever that means for you and your work? To some this may sound unrealistic.  There are numbers to hit! Goals to be achieved!  Yes and regardless of where you are, making time to honor it can bring new energy. This enables us to resist  what we might feel compelled to control through working harder and faster or other means.   How about trying something different and seeing what happens?  Our upcoming Mindful Matters Live may provide some support!

 Mindful Matters Live:
Creating Presence in a Lightning Speed World A favorite Gandhi quoteserves as a platform to our discussion:  “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”  There is more to work too!  Yes, we all feel short on time.  How can presence serve us in this fast paced system? How about as we head towards the end of 2014?  Join Gabriela and Kym as they host a collaborative conversation around these concepts November 5, 10 am pacific/1 pm eastern (that’s next Wednesday!).  We’ll also have drawing for Ariana Huffington’s book on the topic: Thrive: The 3rd Metric to Redefining Success. Register Here

Tapping into our values of Service and Sustainable Results – providing you with tools, concepts and learnings to propel your work forward in more meaningful ways – is important to us. Thus, we’ve added a new space to our website:  Inspirations!  Here we hope to illuminate the path to #mindfulness@work! Whether it’s building the business case for a thriving culture, a learning from a compelling article or blogpost, discovering books with meaning, sparking innovative ways of solving issues or simply provoking thought, our aim is to arm you with the best information possible to help you uncover a better path forward.   From the landing page you’ll find a media shelf where books, videos and our newsletter archives are held, a link to our blog site Mindful Musings, a list of Worthy Shorts – articles and blogs on topics that meet our mission and an area for Building the Business Case – science, research and case studies to back up the reason to invest in these practices.  The content will continually evolve to provide up to date inspiration. And, we invite you to participate!  If you have a favorite book, article or blogpost to share, please let us know!  We’d love to include it!

As usual, we close with some questions.  What would it be like to view your progress this year through the prism of fall colors?  Neither black nor white – in/out; made it/missed it; done/undone – but all the colors in between? And, as you experience this kaleidoscope of perspectives, being open to the possibilities that arise within you, what’s here? Like the farmer who sees opportunity to bring more life from the existing soil before a new cycle begins, we invite you to  bring to life a second harvest.

Mindfulness

What do we mean we say ‘mindfulness’?    Practiced for centuries, mindfulness first became popularized in the mainstream during the 70’s and has been gaining serious momentum as an effective business tool over the past decade.   Traditionalists and new comers alike take pause when pondering its place.  If thrown around too loosely, are we really being mindful or simply signing up for the latest sexy business trend? If held too tightly, how might we alienate new comers who have so much to gain? (A great read on this topic in The Guardian can be found here.)

Here’s the definition we use:

the intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one’s attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment

In practice:

Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally

And some adjectives to go along with it:

present, purposeful, conscious, reflective,  aware, still, clear, intentional.

As with all trends, intention matters. Our intention is to bring heart forward in business, inspiring more socially responsible behavior to drive better outcomes. We believe the core path is the simple act of being mindful.  This space allows for individuals and organizations to develop self awareness and access to their authentic leadership voice.  From this place, we’re able to experience our work, developmental approaches, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, innovation  and all the other imperatives of high performance in much more meaningful ways.  When it comes down to it, being mindful provides the breadth needed to expand emotional and social intelligence, keys to long term effectiveness and thriving workplaces.  There are many ways to develop mindfulness muscles.  Our latest blog post:  5 Ways to Slow your Roll to Better Performance offers some very simplistic methods to get you started!
